The 29th of February or Leap Day

Back to Uptown dances

History:

This was choreographed by Pete and Julia Schult, and has been danced at practice, about once every four years. It has never been performed in public, and likely never will be.

Tune:

"Barber's Holiday", a variation on "Una voce poco fa" from the Barber of Seville by Rossini, (who was born on the 29th of February)

Implements:

Hankies

Distinctive Figure:

The leapfrog step is like an upright caper, with two preparatory slip-backs and a two-footed take-off. With six dancers, it is a leapfrog hey down: top leaps middle, bottom leaps top (now in middle position), middle (in top position) leaps bottom (in middle position), and then all tag back to new place (a galley would be more impressive here, but it was not in our repertoire of steps when this was written). With four dancers, master's side leaps apprentice side, tops leap bottoms, masters (now on the right) leap apprentices again, and original tops leap back to their original position; note that the squire leaps four times, and the anti-squire leaps not at all.
